Vaughn Garland

Vaughn Whitney Garland is a Richmond-based independent curator and sound artist working with community conversations, place-making, and field recordings.  Garland received a Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University’s interdisciplinary Media, Art and Text (MATX) program and an M.F.A from VCU’s Painting and Printmaking program.

Garland has held positions in many of Richmond non-profit arts and cultural organizations and has curated, co-founded, co-organized and managed several public art and sculpture exhibitions including: The Richmond Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition; 1708 Gallery’s inaugural Inlight; Find Art Doors and the 2013 and 2016 RVA Street Art Festivals.  Garland has served as Chair of the Richmond Public Art Commission, Chair of 1708’s Exhibition Committee and commissioner for Richmond’s Urban Design Commission.  He is currently an Education Assistant at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is the Artistic and Executive Director of Sound Arts Richmond.

Garland curated Driving Richmond, a multi-media documentary exhibition that garnered regional and national attention and was the sound artist for Made in Church Hill, an exhibit that featured collected stories from residents of Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood.  He is currently working with a series of sound installations, web archives and online audio tours in and around Richmond including a project with the Richmond’s Latino community and an audio tour and exhibition about the Trail of Enslaved People in Richmond.
