PROJECT STATEMENT:

This will be the first performance of the Recovery Ally Choir of Richmond.  The choir is modeled on the recovery choir phenomenon in the UK, where there are recovery choirs in nearly every major city. The choir will perform a choral piece at that premiered in 2018 at Tate Modern, which was co-written by John Freyer and UK based composer Pete Wyer for the UK Recovery Choirs Unite. The Recovery Ally Choir of Richmond seeks to help build a recovery ready community in Richmond and shine a light on an important issue facing Richmond and the United States.

Organized by 1708 Gallery, InLight Richmond is a FREE, public exhibition of light-based art and performances. Each year, InLight Richmond features performances, sculpture, video, and interactive projects that illuminate pathways, walls, sidewalks, green spaces, and kicks off with the Community Lantern Parade. InLight was created in 2008 on the occasion of 1708 Gallery’s 30th birthday. Thus was born this free, public art exhibition that offers Richmond the opportunity to engage with contemporary art outside the gallery walls and to experience the city in new and unexpected ways.

InLight 2018 will take place on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 7PM to Midnight AND on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 7pm to 10PM, at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. And in recognition of 1708 Gallery’s 40th Anniversary, InLight 2018 will focus on ideas of Community. Recent editorials have described two Richmonds. “RVA” encompasses revitalization, creativity and growth. “Richmond” is divided, challenged, and struggling. Artists are invited to consider this dynamic and to imagine an ideal community—ONE Richmond.

JUROR:  The juror for InLight Richmond 2018 is Kimberli Gant, PhD, the McKinnon Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA. Previously the Mellon Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Arts of Global Africa at the Newark Museum, in Newark, NJ, Gant received her PhD in Art History from the University of Texas Austin (2017), and holds both a MA and BA in Art History from Columbia University (2009) and Pitzer College (2002). She has held curatorial positions at UT’s Warfield Center for African & African Diaspora Studies (2013), The Contemporary Austin (2012), and the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA) in Brooklyn, New York (2005-10). She has curated numerous exhibitions including Wondrous Worlds: Art & Islam Through Time & Place (2016), De-Luxe (2012), There is No Looking Glass Here: Wide Sargasso Sea Re-Imagined (2010), and Johannesburg to New York (2008).
